Air Quality and Exercise: When to Run, Cycle or Train Outdoors

Exercise is good for health, and air pollution changes the dose you inhale while doing it. Rather than treating every polluted day as a reason to stop moving, use the current AQI, pollutant, intensity, duration and route to choose a lower-exposure way to train.

Balance exercise benefits with pollution dose

Outdoor movement has important health benefits. The practical question is not whether exercise is good, but how much polluted air you are likely to breathe during a particular session. Inhaled dose rises with concentration, the time spent exposed and breathing rate. A long, intense run beside busy traffic is therefore different from a short walk in a park.

Use the current US AQI and the dominant pollutant as a starting point. Particle pollution is often a concern during smoke and haze; ozone commonly becomes more important on hot, sunny days. Check whether the reading is current or forecast and avoid treating a citywide value as a precise roadside measurement.

Reduce exposure without skipping movement

  • Move a demanding workout indoors, or replace intervals with an easier, shorter session.
  • Choose parks, paths and side streets away from congested roads where practical; avoid idling vehicles and visible plumes.
  • Shift the session to a time with better current conditions, but recheck the reading because daily patterns vary by pollutant and place.
  • For cycling and running, favour route changes and lower intensity over relying only on a face covering.
  • If you must be active outside in particle pollution, a properly fitting particulate respirator may reduce particle exposure, but fit, heat and exercise tolerance matter.

Know when to stop and get help

Stop exercise if you develop chest pain, severe shortness of breath, dizziness, fainting, wheezing that does not settle, or other concerning symptoms. Seek urgent medical care for emergency symptoms and follow your clinician’s plan for asthma, heart or lung disease.

Frequently asked questions

Can I run when AQI is 150?

At US AQI 101–150, sensitive groups should reduce prolonged or heavy outdoor exertion. If you are not in a sensitive group, consider a shorter, easier or less exposed route; move the workout indoors as conditions worsen or if symptoms occur.

Is cycling beside traffic worse than cycling in a park?

Often it can be. Busy roads can add local pollution, while cycling also raises breathing rate. A lower-traffic route can reduce exposure, though a city AQI value cannot predict every street-level difference.

Does a mask make outdoor exercise safe in bad air?

A well-fitting particle respirator can reduce particle exposure, but it does not remove every gas, gaps reduce protection and strenuous exercise can make it harder to wear. Reducing time, intensity and roadside exposure remains important.
